The Sailor Negoro-Nuri is a truly one of a kind writing instrument. . combining the skills of the Emperors personal lacquer artist, Ms. Teruyo Kato and that of Master nib craftsman Nobuyoshi Nagahara, each instrument is a true work of art, from the intriguing design work to the artistry of the nib. Designed using the Mki-e technique of Tai-shi-tsu, the surface is formed using hand laid lacquer to create the raised texture unique to each piece. Each special pen is available with five specially designed Nagahar nib options in 21kt gold.

Please note: The special Nagahara nibs are custom made. Not only the shape and proformance of the nib, but the feed as well. They are not typical of the Japanese nibs and are broader and apply a heavier ink flow. All may be used upside down for fine writing, without damage.

Tai-shi-tsu Gold

Simple in design, but stunning in appearance, the Negoro-Nuri Gold is a brilliant cornerstone of this collection. Its subtle elegance can only be defined by handling this instrument. A unique use of the Maki-e style of Tai-shi-tsu, meaning, "textured layer", creates an amazing luster that is second only to its performance.



Tai-shi-tsu Gold Lazonge

Muted gold, bronze and other earth tones set the relaxed mood for the Gold Lazonge. Representing the substance of nature, this Tai-shi-tsu maki-e design is as soothing to write with, as it is warm to behold.

Special Maki-e Night with Dim Moon

Tranquil is the defining word for this writing instrument. A subtle view of early evening through tall reeds on the shore of an imagined lake; Tranquil is the only word.
Using traditional hand painted colored Maki-e lacquers; this pen is accented with the misty colors of dusk. As serene as this pen is it is still an amazing tool for written communication


Negoro Nuri Blue

The exquisite designs on the Negoro Nuri Blue and Red are acheived by using
traditional hand painted colored Maki-e lacquers, layered upon layer, and then after weeks of drying and adding color, the barrels are polished with charcoal removing some of the layers, allowing all of the colors to rise to the surface creating the designs you see above and below. As serene as this pen is it is still an amazing tool for written communication
